Art, Culture, and Inclusion in the BRIDGES Project

Aligned with the guidelines of the international BRIDGES project, the discussion will champion the premise that arts and culture are fundamental pillars of community development and the promotion of social inclusion. By revisiting the memory of spaces for social interaction, the session aims to demonstrate how access to culture and the reconfiguration of public space empower citizens, foster equality, and generate tools for collective education (both formal and informal)—all essential for building fairer, more participatory, and democratic societies.

The panel will feature practical and theoretical insights from key figures in Évora’s cultural and academic spheres:

Tiago Navarro | Director of the School of the Arts at the University of Évora (EA-UÉ)

Cristine Zurbach | Full Professor (Retired) at the School of the Arts at the University of Évora (EA-UÉ)

José Russo | Artistic Director of CENDREV (Évora Drama Center); he also played a crucial role as a mediator, opening the theater’s doors to facilitate the filming of this documentary.

The session will be moderated by: María Zozaya-Montes | CIDEHUS-UÉ | BRIDGES

This session is held in partnership with the historic association *Sociedade União Eborense – Bota Rasa* (founded in 1839), with the support of its president, Filipe Rebelo, who has spent years revitalizing and fostering cultural activities within this emblematic 19th-century historic venue.

Heritales promotes @ University of Évora – Portugal (13th-15th of May 2026)

Heritales at the University of Évora promotes The 3rd International Seminar of the BRIDGES Project, entitled ‘Invisible limitations? The inclusion of difference.

From May 13 to 15, the III international seminar organized by the BRIDGES project — «Cultural Bridge». Promoting cultural inclusion to achieve a more democratic society (PLANAPP-FCT, S4P25), based at CIDEHUS of the University of Évora, will take place in online and in-person formats.

This third BRIDGES seminar aims to study inclusion and ways to give visibility to possible avenues for promoting it through culture and the arts. Under the general title of “Invisible Limitations? Inclusion of Difference through Art, Culture and the Digital World,” special attention will be paid to forms of inclusion for intergenerational groups, the elderly, disadvantaged people, people with disabilities, and those with neurodivergences (ADHD, ASD). In line with the project’s interests, cross-cutting themes will again be addressed, primarily encompassing public cultural policies; initiatives to promote cultural and racial diversity; and intersectionality in gender equality, presenting these issues through the lens of the arts.

As in previous meetings, the BRIDGES project invites a wide range of experts from various fields, including research, psychology, medicine, cultural prescription, culture, and the arts, such as theatre and film. In this way, the aim is to address this multifaceted reality from a comprehensive international perspective, through diverse disciplinary representations. This project will address professional trajectories and their association with personal experiences, as well as institutional frameworks structured within organizations, and the various public and artistic expressions that aim to promote positive changes in these social fields. In this sense, and as an essential part of the BRIDGES project’s interests, artistic expressions will be explored as a way to give visibility to these issues and to seek more solutions to achieve true equality through the transformative power of culture.

Heritales promotes @ Casa Do Burgos Evora – Portugal (15th-18th of April 2026)

Heritales at the University of Évora promotes The 2nd International Seminar of the BRIDGES Project, entitled ‘I Have A Dream.

In the light of diversity: art, culture, public policy and the digital world’, will focus particularly on culture and diversity, as well as the ways in which the principles of equality are being undermined. The title refers directly to Martin Luther King’s vision of true equality, as expressed in his famous 1963 speech, ‘I Have a Dream’, which called for an end to racial discrimination, by choosing the words and wishes of union.

During the three-day event, international lecturers, researchers and artists will present their studies and results, demonstrating the importance of public policies in culture and the role of education and the arts in promoting diversity and fostering integration within communities. The research highlights the importance of combatting xenophobia and hate speech directed at migrants, refugees, the Romani-Gypsy community, and cultural minorities.

This second international seminar of the BRIDGES project aims to explore inclusion and highlight possible ways of promoting it through culture. The event will address the following themes: public cultural policies; educational initiatives to promote racial and cultural diversity; perspectives on racism and xenophobia; integration policies for refugees, immigrants, and the Roma community; combatting racism and hate speech; and artistic expressions as a means of raising awareness of these issues and achieving equality through the transformative power of culture.

Heritales @ SHE – Évora – Portugal (21st of July 2022)

Giuseppe, a Shepherd from the City Outskirts & Djurdjevdan Is Yet To Come

The cinema cycle at SHE “In a corner of the world, four different heritages”, will be dedicated to discovering heritages that remain isolated, or are at risk of disappearing.

The fourth session takes us to Europe. First, we accompanied Pastor Giuseppe around Nuoro, on the island of Sardinia (Italy). As he leads his flock to the nearby pastures, he shows them how he has to deal with the traffic and strict rules of the city. The film ironically conveys the contradictions of the decaying value of rural life and Giuseppe’s strong attachment to it.
Then we see the “Djurdjevdan” ceremony, registered in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia. The inhabitants of Oparic (Levac) prepare the Saint Patron’s Day dedicated to the Great Martyr Saint George, to glorify the holiday that follows winter, evoke spring and awaken the senses and harvests. People, plants and legends in this village still weave the colorful crowns of Djurdjevdan together, kill sheep and steal doors, from the beginning of time until now.

King for a Day

The cinema cycle at SHE “In a corner of the world, four different heritages”, will be dedicated to discovering heritages that remain isolated, or are at risk of disappearing.

The third session takes us to the British community of Padstow. Between archival footage, ritual recordings and interviews with Cornwall natives over 9 years, this documentary shows what “May Day” means to them, which is a ritual to welcome summer on the 1st of May. It reveals the fragility of a community that sees its centuries-old traditions disappear under the pressure of a constantly changing world. Will this be the last generation to call ‘Old Oss’ from its stable to welcome summer? The tensions between tradition and progress reveal the importance of cultural identity in a globalized society, between friendship, hope, celebration and unity.
