Synopsis: In any war, there is always a soldier who has lost and the women who are waiting for him to return. The dreams these women weave carry them to the farthest seas. Knowing there is no return, they weave and weave to treat the wounds of war.

Maryam Khalilzade

Bio: Maryam Khalilzadeh is an Iranian filmmaker and illustrator. She holds a BA in Graphic Design and an MA in Animation from the University of Art, Tehran, Iran. On six short films, she has worked as a director, screenwriter, animator, concept artist, layout artist, storyboard designer, and background designer. These films have been shown in different film festivals around the world, and have received awards. In each of her films, Maryam incorporates poetic concepts and stories with her unique and personal graphic style. She is currently studying in Re: Anima, an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Animation and Creative Arts taking place in Genk, Helsinki, and Lisbon.

The Silent Route

Synopsis: During the war years when women were kidnapped and tortured in concentration camps, a young woman was struggling to cross the border with her newborn baby and three elderly relatives. However, their ox-cart got stuck on a muddy road near the security post. While their minds were obsessed with the possibility of being apprehended by the enemy, the magic of humanity brought out something unexpected.

Submitter Statement:  Encouraging viewers to avoid quick judgments and premature conclusions, the animation’s central message urges them to step into others’ shoes, fostering empathy even in challenging situations. This empathetic act often reveals the enchanting essence of our shared humanity. Deep within each of us lies an inherent goodness that, given time or the benefit of doubt, can emerge, promoting mutual understanding. By recognizing ourselves as interconnected threads in the same social fabric, bound by common concerns, joys, and happiness, we unveil the magic that defines our collective existence.

Synopsis: Once upon a time there was a tree that loved a little girl and a little girl who loved it very much. That’s why she visited it every day. This is how their friendship grew and continued.
Throughout her life, the tree always helped her with the goods she needed and with her protection. This mutual co-operation continued over the years.
In the end, tired, decayed and weakened by old age, both continued to stick together, supporting and snuggling each other tenderly.

Last Word

Synopsis: Every fourteen days a language dies. The woman wakes up lonely. She searches the city for somebody who speaks her language, someone who can understand her. The Linguist notices her voice and tries to find her as she travels through the city. At the edge of the city she makes a discovery. Laaste Woord is a parable of the tragedy of the gradual extinction of the world’s languages.

Rasga Mortalha

Synopsis: Rasga Mortalha comes from the legend of the owl “Suindara” – much told in the folklore of the North and Northeast of Brazil – to address the socio-political urgencies of the country. It is believed that the appearance of its white figure, followed by the wild cry – which resembles the sound of a cloth being torn in half – carries with it the sign of death. As a metaphorical vector for thinking, and also transcending, a fatalistic view of Brazilian history, the artist uses this popular tradition to cross centuries of public events with memories, references and personal imaginations, creating a charged and sharp narrative.

Submitter Statement:  The references in Martins de Melo’s work come from his research into a variety of sources. From the poetry of Gonçalves Dias to the gestures of Tuíra Kayapó, from the messianism of Glauber Rocha to the concept of necropolitics coined by the Cameroonian thinker Achilles Mbembe, from Tupinambá mythology to the current struggle of the Gamela people in Maranhão, from cordel literature to armed guerrillas in the Latin American jungles, the artist constructs intricate and symbolic panoramas of contemporary Latin America..

Ali Zare Ghanatnowi

Bio: Ali Zare Ghanatnowi, is an Iranian film director, screenwriter, photographer, translator, author, teacher, graphic designer, cameraman and producer. For the past two decades Ali, has been involved in making over twenty films, including animations, documentaries and short movies. He attained critical acclaim for directing Red Mind (2009) and Dad’s Fragile Doll (2013) which was awarded Best Animation at the International Open Film Festival (IOFF) and Best Animation at the Veterans Film Festival and Londan-X4. Ali’s films The Lights, and Sistan Itinerary, became nominees in CINEMA VERITE International Documentary Film Festival. His recent works, The Internationale, Essence and Empty View, are in animation format.
Ali’s first experience with film and media started at Iran’s National Broadcasting Company, in the state of Fars, where he worked as an editor, writer, and production assistant, when he was only sixteen. He not only continued working in the TV broadcasting field, but produced several shows for school and won his High School the country wide prestigious award for the Best School Show in 1997. Before starting his film studies at University of Tehran and continue on to Cinema School, Ali had already accumulated substantial experience in the field which helped further his university studies.
In directorial and cameraman capacity, Ali worked on a number of TV commercials and advertising campaigns from 2006 to 2016. In 2004 he founded, Cinema School, in Shiraz where he taught numerous workshops such as Principles of Pacing and Timing, Directing, Screenplay Writing, Film Theory and Criticism.FILMOGRAPHY
