Filmclubism in BF

In Baixada Fluminense, independent cultural groups began a filmclub movement that brings cinema to the viewer. For over a decade, these film clubs have a massive role on the social upbringing of suburb regions and the starting of a dialog to change the day-to-day of these cities. This documentary shows the role of six of the major filmclubs in Baixada Fluminense; Cineclube Mate com Angu, from Duque de Caxias; Cineclube Buraco do Getulio, from Nova Iguaçu; Cineclube Donana, from Belford Roxo; Cineclube Cinema de Guerrilha, from São João de Meriti; Cineclube Xuxu com Xis, from Austin; and Facção Feminista Cineclube, from Duque de Caxias. These film clubs take movies to squares, to bars, to schools and to where else there is a place to show. Promote film clubs is preserve the possibility of gathering, of relating with another and the pleasure of share and motivate people.

Carol Vilamaro

Journalist graduated from Faculdade Pinheiro Guimarães.
She studied filmmaking at the Darcy Ribeiro Film School and professional photography at Senac.
Participated in the Laboratory of training in audiovisual in the Produtora Escola Cinema Nosso during every year of 2017.
She was already was director, producer, social media, collaborator and photographer of several films.
She is one of the directors of the BaixadaFilma movement, a movement that began with a manifesto for the territorialization of the budgets of Audiovisual for the Baixada Fluminense, peripheral region of Rio de Janeiro. Curator of Circuito #BaixadaFilma, an itinerant film show with productions by directors from the region. Producer and exhibitor at the Mostra #BaixadaFilma, staged until June 21, 2018 at the Hélio Oiticica Municipal Arts Center, Tiradentes Square – Rio de Janeiro.
Creator of the Volcanic Orange, a seal of independent productions of the Baixada Fluminense. In 2017 she released the documentary Cinema Delas addressing the role of women in film. In the same year he had a documentary project approved in the Cultural Territories edict of the Secretary of Culture of the State and launched on March 8, 2018 in the Odeon a documentary about the cineclubista movement of the Baixada Fluminense, the Cineclubismo in the BF.

Barbara Cunha

Barbara Cunha holds a Design and postgraduated in Studies of Image and Contemporary Culture. She began her career in cinema in 2000 and in 2007 she founded the 99 Produções with the aim of producing audiovisual works and art visual work that have technical and artistic quality for the national and international markets. Her company works with international co-productions, we aim to fully involve the participating countries not only focusing on the financial support, but also in the artistic and technical collaborations between the partners. She is currently directing 2 documentaries and developing a feature fiction film. In visual arts, she uses the photography as her main platform. Most of her personal projects deals with the feminine, the body image its transformations, achievements, limitations, fears, scars. Speaks french, english and spanish, beside portuguese, her first language. .

Fertile Land at Full Tide

Birth is, in many peoples, a time of celebration and worship. However, over the years, the hospitalization of childbirth has destroyed many of the roots that linked us to the ancestral culture. The documentary discusses stories of women who exercised the profession of partaking and brought knowledge that goes beyond obstetric training, presenting birth in a natural and humanized way. The relationship between midwife and parturient, non-medical solutions, and spirituality appear as paths to female freedom while they represent a connection with the ancestry erased by time.

Training for cultural programmers and managers for the visibility of African cinema

African cinematographies are still the most unknown in the world, despite the fact that more and more awards and prizes are awarded in the main film festivals of the world (from Berlin to Venice, passing through Cannes), being applauded not only by the public but also by the directors and programmers of festivals. This ignorance is even more difficult to understand in societies that seem to have forgotten the historical relationships and links with African cultures: if on one hand the culture and traditions of Andalusia and the Algarve owe so much to their historical relations with the Maghreb, on the other hand, we must not forget that Alentejo, Algarve and all of Portugal have been enriched culturally and economically by the former Portuguese-speaking African colonies. The project “TRAINING OF CULTURAL PROGRAMMERS AND MANAGERS FOR THE VISIBILITY OF THE CINEMAS OF AFRICA: CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION BETWEEN THE EUROREGION CINEMATOGRAPHIC FESTIVALS AAA” aims to create stable links of collaboration between cultural entities of the AAA Euroregion in the cinematographic field to promote dialogue and cross-border cooperation. For this purpose, a joint work is proposed on the promotion in the cinematographic contests of the AAA Euroregion of the African cinematographic films and their diaspora. The work will be carried out in a training process aimed at programmers, managers and directors of film festivals in the Algarve, Alentejo and Andalusia, which foresees meetings (a preliminary one in Évora on February 22 and 23 and the final in Tarifa on the 29th of April to May 1), film viewings (on-line delivery from November to February, on-site in Tarifa), study of the history of African cinematography (on-line submission from November to February), meetings with experts and filmmakers Africans (in Évora and Tarifa). The project is organized by the association Al Tarab, creator of the annual African Film Festival of Tarifa and Tangier. Several directors and programmers of festivals of the AAA Euroregion are involved in the project: Paula Duque, director of the Marvão International Film Festival – PERIPERIAS (Alentejo), María Zozaya Montes, director of the International Festival of Cinema on Patrimony – HERITALES (Alentejo) , Carla Magro Dias, director of the International Festival of Curtas-metragens of Evora – FIKE (Alentejo), Marina Lanza, programmer of the International Film Festival of Lagoa – ALGARES (Algarve), José Ramón Martínez, co-director of the International Short Film Festival and Alternative Cinema of Benalmádena – FICCAB (Andalusia), David Sánchez, programmer of the International Short Film Festival in San Roque – FICSAN (Andalusia), Ana Isapel Pozo, programmer of the Festival Corto Genial of Puente Genil (Andalusia).

She holds a PhD in Ethnology from the EHESS (École en Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales), Paris. Degree in Geography and History from the Complutense University of Madrid. Master’s Degree in Cultural Anthropology from the National Itztapalapa University of Mexico City. She is president of Al Tarab and founder and director of the African Film Festival of Córdoba-FCAT. He has been a juror at numerous international and African film festivals around the world, member of the ICAA cinematographic aid commission and is a Knight of Arts and Letters of the French Republic.

Marion Berger

Graduate in Art History and Film, Marion has worked in the programming department of the Spanish Film Library before joining the FCAT programmer in 2007, a position that has led her to specialize in African theaters. He collaborates punctually with specialized magazines and has coordinated and drafted part of the African Notebooks of Casa África. She has also given different conferences about African cinemas in festivals and universities (University of Seville, University of Brasilia, Political Film Festival of Buenos Aires, Spanish Cultural Center of Lima, Zinebi, etc.).

In Kibera (Nairobi), one of the biggest slums of the world, Simon, Philip and Geoffrey have created the collective MADE IN KIBERA (MIK). Their goal is to unite the numerous artists of Kibera and provide them with a space inside the tough conditions of the slum where they can grow. MIK is constructing a professional music and video studio that will help the local artists record their work in higher quality and, in order to promote it, they are preparing a massive event that is already bringing together all Kibera artists.

Luis Lanchares Bardaji

Luis studied Audiovisual Communication Bachelor (Madrid) and an MA in Social Communication (UK). He participated in the creation of two webseries, however, he always focused in the use of communication to create impact and change. He has worked for several NGO’s creating audiovisual materials, as well as being chief of communication for KUBUKA NGO in Kenya. Luis is a strong believer in the use of visuals for social change and KIBERA SAUTI, his first feature documentary, is the first time he will use the cinematographic language as one more ally for social communication. Nowadays he lives in Tenerife, where he mainly works in the camera department, while he’s preparing his next film about a group of acrobats from Zambia.

Supper for the Dead Souls

“…The dead souls enter into homes at midnight, passing around the laden tables, departing afterwards satiated only by the aroma of the food. If, instead no dish has been prepared the dead leave accompanied by heavy sighing…”
It is still alive in Sardinia the ancient habit of leaving served on the table, on the night between 1st and 2nd November, a supper for their own dead, consisting of a full meal characterized by sos macarrones de sos mortos (the macaroni of the dead).
Filmed in Orune, in central Sardinia, this documentary – with an observational approach – describes the preparation of the banquet and some connected rituals.

Ignazio Figus

Born in 1960 in Alghero (Sardinia – Italy), he lives and works in Nuoro (Sardinia). He learnt about documentary production at the Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico, where he was worked since 1987. He is responsible for the audiovisual activities of the institute. His first directing experience was in 1996 with the documentary Giorni di Lollove (Days of Lollove), wich focused on the daily life and festive occasions of a small outward lying ward of Nuoro. This first work was followed in 1997 by Il Lino a Busachi, about the production of working of linen in a small hamlet in central Sardinia, in 2000 by Toccos e Repiccos-Bell ringers in Sardinia, which proposed documenting what remains of the world of bell ringing in Sardinia, in 2004 Dogon in Barbagia, in 2008, Brokkarios, about a family of potters who live and work in Siniscola, in eastern Sardinia, in 2014, S’impinnu (The Vow) and in 2017, La cena delle anime (Supper for the Dead Souls).
He has collaborated on several significant productions outside the ISRE, of these it is worth remembering Giuseppe, pastore di periferia (condiVisioni, 2004), Trittico Pastorale (condiVisioni, 2008), Il Coraggio e la Poesia ( Amm.ne Comunale di Ittiri, 2010) and Ab Origine – Biofilm (condiVisioni with the support of BioSardinia and Slow Food, 2015).

Cultural Heritage, Interfaces and new Media – Worshops with Marina Thomé and Marcia Mansur

Digital platforms are transforming the way photographers, documentarists and journalists create and express audiovisual narratives. Every day, about 1.8 billion digital images are published on the web. The web environment and contemporary media enable meetings of different perspectives, participatory narratives and new formats of storytelling through different interfaces, mobile solutions, immersive experiences in virtual real age, web documentaries and mapped audiovisual projections.

The program immerses in concepts and cases that use multi-platform narratives as support for documentary content, discusses production steps and questions how interactivity transforms distribution possibilities, social impact and engagement.The activity will discuss the relationship creative use of the documentary process and the promotion of dialogue on cultural diversity, memory and territory; and how to combine photography, video and audio in transmedia projects to promote cultural goods. The Sound of Bells + Lecture

In Minas Gerais, Brazil, bell sounds set the pace of life of the residents of the historic cities, announcing time for work, rest, pray, and celebrate. Over 40 different bell rings are known in the region, and were nominated as Brazilian Intangible Cultural Heritage. The bell ringers, characters from the top of the towers, are known to have transformed bell rings over the centuries from their colonial origins and have mixed them with the strong African heritage in Brazil. The documentary is a poetic representation of religious experience in everyday life. The feature film The Sound of Bells is part of an expanded documentary project, which is pioneering the use of new media for the dissemination of the intangible heritage. Digital technology can support increased appreciation of cultural heritage, strengthen dialogue and understanding among cultures. How do younger generations react, interact or create new ways to express their cultural heritage? The project works with the combination of memory and new technologies, sound mapping and community engagement through a transmedia production that includes an online multimedia platform with sound cartography and innovative content, an interactive documentary, audiovisual public interventions on churches facades and an award-winning audio guide app for mobile devices.
